Research Unit: Cross Canada Trip with a
visit to a National Park PowerPoint Presentation
This project will be complete over a three-month time
span. Budget your time. Acquire materials early. Plan ahead. Use the
4-step process. The project may be done in pairs or individually. To
complete this project you will need a basic knowledge of Microsoft
Power Point and scanning.
Plan a trip lasting a maximum of three months, scheduled during any part of the year. The trip may start and stop anywhere but must include the stops described on the Points of Interest sheet. A: Trip details listed below will be summarized in a chart designed and produced by students in a PowerPoint presentation.
B: A large bristol board map and smaller (optional) maps
must also be submitted with the chart. The maps will identify each of
the sites visited and trace the method of transportation from one
destination to the next OR can be done as a Powerpoint Presentation
outlining your trip.
Part 2: National Park Visit
(To be contained within Part 1 as part of
the trip.) (This section can be done on the 3 worksheets provided or
the work sheets can be used for rough work and completed by
PowerPoint)
Theme One -- Location On a large-scale map indicate the
relative location of your national park. Identify the location by
latitude and longitude. A small-scale map is to be made to complete
this section.
Theme Two -- Place Summarize the landform region that the national park falls in. Complete a climograph of the park from a nearby weather station Identify key flora and faunas of the park. Indicate the importance of landforms in the park and the park/s uniqueness.
Theme Three -- Interaction Ascertain the reasons why this park was established. A brief historical geography is to be provided. In addition the student is to identify the parks role today, list park services and the human and environmental threats to the park.
At the end of step 1 you must conference with your teacher. Share your research plans, portfolio and timelines.

At the end of step 3 consult with your teacher. Have your Research Portfolio with you. Study the Project Rubricof the Powerpoint Rubric and the Poster Rubric. Strive for Level 3, the expected grade 9 levels or higher.

Show evidence of your work using:
Transfer your learning - information, reflections and conclusions - in two ways.
Organize the stops on your cross Canada trip. Create a neat chart
highlighting each stop and including, points of interest, time spent
at each destination, distance traveled from one destination to the
other, mode of travel, travel time between destinations.
On a bristol board map or slide neatly layout your trip (you may
include smaller optional maps). Identify each site, the method of
transportation and route taken. Using a Powerpoint presentation
outline your trip as it would unfold.
The national park visit is to be contained within the products of Part 1. The required information will provide more detail for your designated National Park than for other stops on your trip.
